Zelensky to bring Macron and top European allies for White House showdown with Trump as Starmer hosts war talks

VOLODYMYR Zelensky will be joined by Emmanuel Macron and several top European allies as he flies to Washington to meet Donald Trump on Monday. The Ukrainian president has been summoned to talk about Vladimir Putin's latest war demands as the tyrant attempts to wrestle back control of peace talks. 3 3 3 EU President Ursula von der Leyen was first to announce she will be by Zelensky's side before a string of fellow superpowers followed. German chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni and Finland's Alexander Stubb are all now set to travel. More details around who may attend are expected to emerge following a "coalition of the willing" meeting today. It is due to be chaired by Sir Keir Starmer, Macron and Merz along with a host of other continental leaders and will focus on Europe's response to Russia's peace terms. Diplomatic sources have revealed a number of details around a reported agreement discussed between Putin and Trump in Alaska. One of the major things reportedly spoken about involves territorial swaps. The Kremlin tyrant is believed to have said he must claim Donetsk and Luhansk regions as Russian. In exchange, he would freeze the frontline elsewhere and halt all future military advances in southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Sources close to Zelensky believe the Ukrainian leader is unlikely to ever agree to giving up territory as it would be a win for Russia. The US has reportedly proposed an agreement that would see Ukraine be offered Nato-esque protections similar to Article 5. The deal would importantly not see Kyiv join the alliance which is one of Putin's main demands. It comes as Putin broke his silence overnight as he vowed to finally agree to a 'fair' deal to end the war in Ukraine. Vlad told top officials in Moscow that hostilities must stop 'as soon as possible' but insisted the 'root causes' of the war must be ironed out before could peace be achieved. Zelensky responded saying that there can never be a peace plan until Russia stops killing innocent civilians. In a post on X, Zelensky said Vlad's conflicting words compared to his actions "complicates the situation". He added that Putin continues to lack "the will to carry out a simple order to stop the strikes".

Starmer to meet with European leaders for 'coalition of the willing' talks on Ukraine

European leaders who make up the 'coalition of the willing' are set to hold a conference call on Sunday - ahead of crunch talks between Donald Trump and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy next week. The coalition - co-chaired by , France's President Emmanuel Macron and Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz - has the aim of bringing countries together to protect a peace deal in . Top of the agenda at Sunday's meeting will be securing a concrete commitment from Mr Trump on a security guarantee that would act as a powerful backstop in any Russia-Ukraine peacekeeping arrangement. Ukraine war latest: European leaders seemed buoyed by the US president's most recent hints on the subject, in the knowledge that US military might is likely to deter Vladimir Putin from advancing in the future. They will also discuss how to bring Mr Zelenskyy into talks after Mr Trump and Mr Putin's saw him left out in the cold. In coordinated statements, European leaders said Mr Zelenskyy must play a greater role in future talks, and that peace cannot be achieved without him. The hard bit will be to persuade the unpredictable US administration to change its approach, something that has proved almost impossible in the past. When Mr Trump re-entered the White House and made it clear the US would no longer provide a blank cheque to protect peace in Europe, others decided they had to step up, and the 'coalition of the willing' was thrown together in March. Since then, information about the allied peacekeeping effort has been patchy, but we know it includes over 30 countries, which have been asked to pledge whatever military support they can, including troops. Read more: What has been forthcoming from the group though, has been consistent attempts to use their limited leverage to put pressure on the US. That will continue ahead of crunch talks between Mr Trump and Mr Zelenskyy, which are set to take place in Washington on Monday.

France, Britain agree to coordinate nuclear deterrence capabilities

France and Britain say they have agreed to coordinate their respective nuclear deterrence. The move is seen as an apparent effort to counter threats posed by Russia. French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer made the announcement at a news conference following their meeting on Thursday. Macron was on a state visit to Britain. The British government issued a statement noting that the respective deterrents of both countries are independent but can be coordinated. The statement also said, "any adversary threatening the vital interests of Britain or France could be confronted by the strength of the nuclear forces of both nations." The agreement by the two nuclear powers is apparently driven by an urge to strengthen the security of Europe in the face of Russia, which continues its invasion of Ukraine. Macron and Starmer also talked with countries that make up a "coalition of the willing," which are considering sending peacekeepers to Ukraine to guarantee its security in the event of a ceasefire. Starmer revealed plans to locate the coalition's headquarters in Paris for the time being and begin full-fledged preparations so that troops can be promptly deployed when a peace deal comes.
